We recommend that you run this quick tutorial to familiarize yourself with Asutype.

Let's start Asutype

If your Asutype is not yet running:

  1. Run Asutype by double-clicking the Asutype icon in the Asutype folder or program group. Click "OK" to close the "Welcome" box if needed.
  2. The Asutype running icon should appear in your system tray, near the clock.
  3. Right click the icon to open the pop-up menu of Asutype. Choose the "Main Window" command to activate Asutype's main window.

Start WordPad as your text editor

For this tutorial we will use the Windows WordPad program as our text editor.

  1. If WordPad isn't already running, run it by choosing "Start" -> "Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "WordPad" from the Start button. Otherwise, switch to WordPad.

Asutype works at the operating system level to add spell check and speed typing functionality to all other software such as WordPad, NotePad, Outlook Express etc. That's why when Asutype is running, WordPad will have on-the-fly spell check feature, which is not originally included.

Try the mistake detection

  1. Type "Thanks for trying asutype " (without the quote marks, and remember to include the ending space).
  2. A beep should sound to alert you that you've made a mistake.
  3. The word "asutype" should now be red underlined, marking that it is a mistake and a small window with a few suggestions should pop up.

Asutype detects mistakes as you type

This is because Asutype is set to detect and alert you to any mistake that you may make while typing. See the "How Do I Spell Check As I Type" topic for more details.

Teach Asutype to recognize a new word

  1. Press F2 to add the word "asutype" into a spelling dictionary.
  2. The suggestions window and red underlining should disappear as the word "asutype" is now accepted as a correct word.

You can add new words as you go

This is because you can add a new word directly to Asutype from the suggestion pop-up window. See the "Suggestion Pop-up" topic for more details.

  1. Switch to Asutype's main window and click the "Dictionary Editor" item on the Task column on the left.
  2. Click the "user" tab to view the user dictionary.
  3. The word "asutype" is now listed in the dictionary.

You can add new words as you go

Asutype comes with a built-in English dictionary containing about 100,000 words and an empty user dictionary. You can create and open other dictionaries. The built-in English dictionary has limited editing capability (you can only delete words from it) but you can add new words into other dictionaries as many as you want. See the "Dictionary Editor" topic for more details.

  1. Switch back to WordPad.
  2. Type "and havve fun!" (without the quote marks, and remember to type double 'v' letter in the word "havve" as a deliberate error).
  3. A beep should sound to alert you that you've made a mistake.
  4. The word "havve" should now be red underlined marking that it is a mistake and a small window with suggestions will pop up.

  5. Press 0 to correct the mistake "havve" with the currently selected suggestion (i.e. "have") and also add the pair "havve" -> "have" to a correction list.
  6. The word "havve" will change to "have" and the suggestions pop-up window will disappeare.

This is because you can use the 0-key to do two things at once:

  • To correct the mistake now.
  • To tell Asutype to learn and correct the mistake automatically if you make it again.

And thus, if you make a mistake, you only make it once. Asutype makes sure that your mistakes will never be repeated.

Check the new correction has been added into a correction list

  1. Switch to Asutype's main window and click the "Correction Editor" item on the Task column on the left.
  2. Click the "user" tab to view the user correction list.

  3. The line"havve" -> "have" is listed in the list.

The list contains all common spelling mistakes along with their corrections that Asutype recognizes automatically. Each time you make a mistake that is already in the list, Asutype will automatically change it by its correction.

Asutype comes with a built-in list containing about 1,000 mistakes and an empty user list. You can create and open other correction lists. The built-in list has limited editing capability (you can only delete words from it) but you can add new mistakes into other lists as many as you want. See the "Correction Editor" topic for more details.

Now try to type the whole sentence again

  1. Switch back to WordPad.
  2. Type [Enter] to make a new line.
  3. Type "thanks for trying asutype and havve fun!" (remember double 'v' in the word "havve" as a deliberate error).
  4. The sentence now changes to "Thanks for trying asutype and have fun!" without any beeping or underlining.

This is because the word "asutype" is now recognized as correct, and the mistake "havve" is now also recognized and corrected to "have" automatically. Asutype also capitalizes the sentence automatically.

Asutype can adapt itself to your keyboarding habits, learn and become smarter with use. If you use it everyday, it will learn all your new words and mistakes quickly and effectively. Normally after a few weeks using it, most of your typographical and spelling errors will be recognized and corrected automatically. As a result, you'll write more accurately and much faster, because you don't need to stop typing and go back to correct mistakes yourself.

Try text expansion

  1. Switch back to WordPad.
  2. Type " Enjoy aut" (without the quote marks).

    3. Text expansion is built-in into Asutype

  3. A window will appear at the top of WordPad saying "Asutype". This window - "The Hint window" - tells you that what you are typing is a text shortcut and if you type a space or a punctuation mark now you will get the content of the text shortcut as displayed.
  4. Type "!" (without the quote marks).
  5. The text will automatically change to " Enjoy Asutype!" and the Hint window disappears.

    6. Text expansion is built-in into Asutype

This is because Asutype is set to expand text shortcuts to a longer text automatically. The shortcut "aut" -> "Asutype" is one of a few sample shortcuts that come with Asutype. You can create your own text shortcuts using the Shortcut Editor.)

Check the shortcut is in a shortcut list

  1. Switch to Asutype's main window and click the "Shortcut Editor" item on the Task column on the left.
  2. Click the "TryMeNow" tab to view the included "TryMeNow" shortcut list.

  3. The line "aut" -> "Asutype" should be listed in the list.

Try other included shortcut samples

  1. Switch back to WordPad.
  2. Type "tryme1".

    3. Try other included sample shortcuts

  3. Try out other "tryme2", "tryme3", "tryme4", "tryme5" and "tryme6" to see what happens.
